Stars in the Sahara: A Poem
Written by North Africa Staff
Sahara
All I really wanted was to sit in awe of Him,
To look up when the sun went down as stars came filling in.
I thought if I under the sky could see His glory then
A humbled cry and worthy song from my heart would ascend.
All I truly asked for was a chance to worship He,
The One whose handwork above was made to praise and sing.
So when the clouds turned into shrouds and veiled the starry sea,
It seemed that He had pulled away a special time from me.
Then He lent to me His gaze and whispered in my ear,
“Do you think I and all my work can be found in the near?
You seek to see my majesty but what I've made is mere.
So if you want to see my glory you won't find it here.
That you would learn to look beyond I turned from your demand
To teach you all you see and know that I am greater than.
The stars may shine but they are mine, I hold them in my hand.
Do you not know the light above the stars is much more grand?
Am I greater than the modest dust that I have formed?
Or would you worship at the feet of Sight and not the Lord?
It's true my art can hold the heart and turn the cold to warm,
But if you couldn't see the art would you the artist mourn?
So if you want to see my face you will not need your eyes.
Be still and know, my simple son, in you my Spirit lies.
Know that I am God alone and worthy of your cries.
Just recall that like the stars I from the darkness rise.”
