Job Description Overview

Your primary job is to mentor students stateside before and after they go through our 3-month overseas program. Your job is to develop, encourage, and teach these students as they explore their role within the Great Commission.  You will help the participants identify and overcome obstacles, coach them through support raising, and provide knowledge that will ready them for our overseas program.  Upon the participant's return to the US, you will help them debrief and process their experience and identify practical next steps toward engagement with the Great Commission.  When appropriate, you will facilitate a connection between the participant and long-term sending agencies.  In addition to individual mentoring with each student, you will host conference calls, and conduct support trainings.

REQUIREMENTS:

Critical Qualities

  • Mature Christian faith and agreement with Cafe 1040’s statement of faith

  • A passionate follower of Jesus Christ with a proven devotion to the habits necessary to maintain a daily relationship with him

  • Reflect personal and public integrity in line with Biblical principles

  • Possess a longing for the fulfillment of the Great Commission

  • Value for developing others and seeing them as individuals

  • Natural lean towards coaching and mentoring

  • Patient and understanding for the unique characteristics of the millennial and Gen Z generation

Skills and Experience:

  • Significant experience in one-on-one and team mentoring environments for young adults

  • Experience with cross-cultural ministry and “culture shock” preferred

  • Exceptional interpersonal communication skills, both verbal and listening

  • Demonstrated ability to help a person process serious emotional, spiritual, mental, and relational struggles

  • Proven ability to maturely communicate Biblical truth in small groups and individual mentoring

  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively in a team environment

  • Ability to perform well under stress to meet deadlines

  • Ability to mentor in a virtual environment

  • Quick-learning and self-teaching

  • Patient and adaptable disposition to changing circumstances

  • Strong multi-tasking and problem-solving ability

  • English Speaking

  • Skill in MS Office Suite and Apple OS

Specific Job Duties, Tasks, and Responsibilities

  • Meet with participants in one-on-one and group mentor meetings before departure to help prepare them for their overseas experience

  • Run student support training sessions and coach each student during their personal support process

  • Record meeting notes, review notes, and be fully prepared for each encounter with the participant

  • Pray regularly for the participants

  • Coordinate with other mentors to lead conference calls prior to departure

  • Upon return to the US, help the participant debrief their experience and identify practical next steps beyond Cafe 1040

  • Communicate with sending agencies to explore opportunities

  • Maintain relationships with graduates upon completion of our program

  • When graduates are ready to connect with equipping or sending agencies, facilitate that process

  • Support and uphold the policies, values, and statement of faith of Cafe 1040

  • Maintain sustainable funding levels for role through Cafe 1040 support-raising model

  • Actively take the opportunities to mobilize those people in the scope of your influence toward involvement and investment in the mission and vision of Cafe 1040

However, traits exemplified in the counseling profession will be part of the mentor’s role: Listening, Nurturing, Supporting, and Advising.

This is a support-based position. Nothing in this job description restricts Cafe 1040’s right to assign or reassign duties and responsibilities to this job at any time.  Responsibilities occasionally may require an adjusted work schedule, and evening/weekend hours in order to meet deadlines.
